Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a type of cosmetic surgery that enhances the size, shape, and overall appearance of a person’s breasts. This procedure has gained immense popularity over the years, with more and more people opting for it to achieve their desired look.
However, not everyone is an ideal candidate for breast augmentation. Certain factors need to be considered before undergoing this surgery. In this article, we will discuss who is a good candidate for breast augmentation and the key considerations to consider.
Factors to Consider
Before deciding if someone is a good candidate for breast augmentation, there are several factors to take into account. These include:
- Age: Breast augmentation is typically recommended for individuals over 18 years old. This is because the breasts continue to develop and change in shape until a person reaches adulthood.
- General Health: Candidates must have good overall health before considering breast augmentation. Any underlying medical conditions may increase the risk of complications during or after surgery.
- Breast Development: The ideal candidate should have fully developed breasts, as this ensures the best results from the surgery.
- Emotional and Mental Well-being: Breast augmentation is a major decision, and it is crucial for candidates to have realistic expectations and be emotionally stable before undergoing the procedure.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Women who are considering breast augmentation should wait until they have completed their family planning. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the appearance of the breasts, which may require follow-up surgeries.
Physical Considerations
Apart from the above factors, some physical considerations can determine if someone is a good candidate for breast augmentation. These include:
- Breast Size: Candidates with small breasts or asymmetrical breasts may benefit from breast augmentation to achieve a more balanced and proportionate figure.
- Breast Shape: Individuals with tuberous or constricted breasts may also be good candidates for breast augmentation, as it can help in correcting their shape.
- Skin Elasticity: Good skin elasticity is necessary for the breasts to adjust to the implants and avoid any visible rippling or wrinkling after the surgery.
- Nipple Position and Areola Size: The position of the nipples and the size of the areolas can affect the final appearance of the breasts after augmentation. Candidates with concerns in this area should discuss it with their surgeon.
- Body Shape and Size: A person’s overall body shape and size can also play a role in determining if they are a good candidate for breast augmentation. Ideally, individuals should be at a stable weight and have realistic expectations about the results.

How to prepare for surgery
When you meet with Dr. Liebscher, you get instructions to follow before your breast augmentation. This may include receiving a baseline mammogram before and after your breast augmentation. Doing so will help to identify any changes in your breast tissue.
Your surgeon will likely recommend avoiding certain medications before your scheduled surgery. Specifically, you will need to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications and aspirin as these can increase your risk of bleeding during surgery. Your surgeon will also give you additional instructions regarding medications.
If you smoke, you will be advised to stop smoking for an extended time. Since breast augmentation is typically an outpatient procedure, you will need to have someone drive you home upon the completion of your surgery. Having someone stay with you for your first night home after the procedure would be best.
Anesthesia and medications
You will be given medications to ensure that you are comfortable during your surgery. Intravenous sedation and local anesthesia are commonly used during breast augmentation. General anesthesia may be provided to some patients.
Procedure length of time
Completing your breast augmentation will take your cosmetic surgeon between one and three hours. Various factors will determine the length of time, such as the type of implant placed, the technique used, and the type of anesthesia you receive. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss this with you during your consultation.
Recovery time
Before you are discharged and allowed to go home, Dr. Liebscher will give you specific recovery instructions. Be sure to follow them to ensure a successful recovery. After your surgery is completed, your breasts will be wrapped in a surgical bra or gauze dressings. Surgical dressings will be removed after a few days. You will need to wear a support bra afterward. If drains have been placed, you must follow your surgeon’s instructions on how to care for and empty them. These will be removed during your first postoperative visit.
It is normal for your breasts to be discolored and swollen immediately after surgery. The swelling will gradually dissipate over a month, and the discoloration will fade quickly. For the first two to five days after your surgery, you can expect your chest to be stiff and sore, and your breasts may feel sensitive, warm, or itchy.
Raising your arms may be difficult temporarily. You will want to avoid any strenuous activity for several weeks. This includes twisting your upper body or pushing, pulling, or lifting heavy objects. After you resume your normal physical activities, you must still be gentle with your breasts for at least one more month.
Although you should avoid strenuous activity, you must frequently walk around for several minutes every few hours. This reduces your risk of developing blood clots in your legs. Depending on your job type, you may return to work within several days to a week.
